Along with designing a permanent, interactive lobby exhibition and developing a comprehensive environmental graphics, donor recognition, and wayfinding sign program for NPR’s new, state-of-the-art headquarters located in Washington, DC, Poulin + Morris also created a branding and identity program for the new NPR retail store—NPR Commons.

NPR Commons serves an essential role in the overall visitor’s experience at the organization’s new headquarters. Along with selling an assortment of NPR merchandise, the store hosts casual, small events and acts as a meeting point for group tours. To reflect the multi-media news organization’s history in radio broadcast, Poulin + Morris employed patterns and colors referencing radio frequencies into the branding and identity program, a visually dynamic effect used throughout all the NPR design programs. The incorporation of NPR’s iconic logo and recycled materials conveys quality, curiosity, discovery, and “green” values—characteristics associated with the NPR brand. The branding and identity program includes the design of eco-friendly shopping bags, gift boxes, gift cards, labels, hangtags, and coordinated packaging for the store as well as informational and display signs and design standards.
