The Sony Health and Fitness Center, an employees-only health club facility, is located in Sony Music Entertainment’s headquarters building in New York City.
An environmental graphics program was developed for the entire facility which includes color and materials specifications for all floor, ceiling, and wall surfaces, identification and directional signs, as well as the establishment of a common visual theme throughout the interior spaces of the health club. A continuous graphic mural celebrating the theme ‘the body as machine’ is used as a basis for this concept. The mural itself is composed of contemporary, color duotone photographic details of the human form and period photographic images of the human form in motion by Edward Muybridge. The designers superimposed on this photographic background oversized details of period engravings of machine parts, such as pulleys, levers, gears, and the like. The mural’s graphic theme is further enhanced by the intermittent placement of quotations by famous historical figures, as well as relevant lyrics written by Sony recording artists.
